NUTRITION TIPS
At Tim Ganley's Fitness doing Strength & Movement is only a part of the fitness equation. Since one of the first steps to getting fit is to eat well, we also provide nutritional guidelines, food shopping tips and monitoring of your eating habits.
BEWARE NEW TRANS FAT SUBSTITUTE - Now that we are all smarter about dangerous trans fat, a new substitue ingredient has been created that's just as bad for you. Check labels now for INTERESTERIFIED OIL in foods claiming to be free of trans fat. Like trans fat this oil reduces healthy HDL cholesterol levels and raises blood sugar. Avoid this oil and choose products made with corn, canola, safflower or sunflower oils.
ALWAYS START THE DAY RIGHT AND EAT BREAKFAST
Why is waking up so tough? You’ve been fasting. Your levels of blood sugar, which powers the brain and muscle, are shot. Thinking straight, let alone working out effectively, are beyond you. Carbs will get you going again, and protein will fill you up and build muscle. No matter what you’ve got planned for the day, your most important meal will be your first. So, Know This:
A MIX OF CARBS WORKS BEST - whole grains and fruits
PROTEIN A MUST – Eggs – mix of whole and egg whites
FAT IS OK – A good fat source - Helps you feel full
FOOD DIARY - Many people do not realize how much they may be eating. We recommend you keep a food diary for at least a week. Write down everything and be specific. If you eat a turkey sandwich for lunch, note the type of bread, how many slices of meat, and all the trimmings and condiments. Keeping such a log will help you be aware of your eating patterns. It is also recommended you take note of "why" you ate something - we want to recognize emotional eating as well.
