EXERCISE IS THE REAL LIFE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH
"According to the US Dept of Health approximately 27% of adults between the ages of 65 and 74 have difficulty with, or are unable to perform, at least one basic activity of daily living (National Center for Health Statistics [NCHS] 2006). That number climbs to 44% for adults age 75 and older (NCHS 2006). In addition, it is estimated that 22%-53% of the older adult population will develop sarcopenia, a significant loss of muscle mass and strength seen with advancing age and an indepedent risk factor for development of disability (Iannzzi-Sucich, Prestwood & Kenny 2002)" (Fitness Journal, Feb 2007).
Lack of physical activity is the cause of many challenges of aging. The decline in muscle strength has detrimental effects. Studies (Bean et al. 2002) have shown that traditional progressive resistance training improves function and quality of life as you age --even the very old. (We have a client that came to us at age 92 and is still with us at 100. She was in a walker at first - but soon did not need her walker). In fact after a fall, she believes that her injuries were less severe and her recovery quicker because of her participation in our exercise and balance program (Strength & Movement Training)
Our Strength & Movement Training program is progressive resistance training. S&M will help you maintain your weight, kick up your metabolism, build muscle and bone density, and stay healthy inside too.
Strenth & Movement offers many benefits for the health, function and quality of life as you age. Strength & Movement builds muscle strength and bone density and will help fight these signs of aging:
- Weight gain
- Fat shifting to belly
- Increased Bone loss and muscle tone
- Flat-butt
- Arm and knee skin beginning to sag
- Increased risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes
- Mental cloudiness
Staying active can help slow the aging process and give you greater wellness and lasting independence. A recent AARP survey showed that 64% of adults of 50+ stated that physical activity was the "best" thing they could do for their health.
